Ethical Decision Making

The Course

Ethical decision making is a skill which you can improve through practice and careful reflection. This course blends theory and practice to help you become a more effective ethical decision-maker.

Ethical Decision Making will train you to identify the ethical issues of a decision; consider the different stakeholders and how they are impacted; recognise any assumptions and salience; and be able to make strong arguments to justify your decision.

Workshops for a group to discuss the key ethical points covered in the online learning

Ethical Decision Making is an online course that individuals can use to improve their skills in making ethical decisions. It can also be run with a group, where each member of the group follows the online training. At the end of each section the group then comes together for a workshop.

We provide materials to run the workshops ensuring the key ethical points are identified and discussed. If required, we can also facilitate tailored workshops with ethics specialists.

I founded the Inter-Disciplinary Ethics Applied (IDEA) CETL in 2005. As Head of Centre, my prime responsibility is to work with the Executive and Centre Manager to develop the strategic direction of the Centre in its mission to become a world-class Centre for Inter-Disciplinary Applied Ethics. This includes leading the development of its learning and teaching, research and professional ethics training and consultancy activities, and seeking to ensure their integration as mutually supportive functions of the Centre.

We provide ethical review and consultancy services, training/continuing professional development, and commissioned research. I also do some teaching, both on IDEA’s postgraduate programmes and in the Business School.

I joined the IDEA Centre in September 2012 after completing my PhD in Applied Ethics at Edinburgh University. Before returning to education, I trained as an accountant and auditor and worked for Deloitte for seven years. I am a chartered accountant (FCA). I am interested in all areas of applied ethics but my particular topics of focus are the ethics of tax avoidance and the ethics of economic sanctions.

A Course Advisory Board made up of ethics specialists working in companies provides perspective on the course giving valuable insights on the ethical challenges being faced by organisations.
